How to download an Instagram video

1. Copy the link. For a Reel, tap the Share arrow (the paper plane) and choose Copy link. For a video in your feed, tap the three dots at the top right of the post and choose Copy link. On the website, copy the address bar while the post is open.
2. Paste it above and press Go. The video card appears with the account name and length.
3. Pick MP4 or MP3. MP4 prepares the video at the best quality Instagram offers. MP3 audio gives you the sound only.
4. Save the file. A Download button appears after a few seconds; your browser saves it like any other file.

Which Instagram links work

• Reels: https://www.instagram.com/reel/… and the older https://www.instagram.com/reels/…
• Video posts: https://www.instagram.com/p/… when the post is a single video
• IGTV: https://www.instagram.com/tv/…, the long-form format Instagram has since folded into regular video posts; old links still resolve

The post must be on a public account. Links to profiles, hashtag pages, explore pages and search results are not videos. Photo posts, carousels, Stories and Highlights are not supported; see the questions below for why.

If you paste a link to a photo post, you will see "unsupported" or "unavailable" rather than a download button. Instagram serves photos and videos through different routes, and this tool only takes the video one.

What you get

Instagram stores each video in several sizes and picks one for you based on your screen and connection. We ask for the largest one, typically 1080×1920 for a vertical Reel or 1080×1350 for a feed video, and pass it to you as an MP4 without re-encoding. Quality is the same as the best version Instagram plays in its own app. Very old uploads may only exist at 640 or 720 pixels wide, in which case that is what you get; we do not upscale.

The MP3 option converts the audio track to a 192 kbps MP3. It captures whatever plays in the post: the creator's voice, the music they attached, or both. Reels that use a licensed track are muted in some countries; if the Reel is silent for a signed-out visitor, the file will be too.

Prepared files stay available for about an hour, then are deleted.

No login, and why that matters

Some Instagram downloaders ask you to sign in, or to install an extension that reads your session. We do neither. The tool only ever asks Instagram for what a logged-out visitor can see, so there is no account for you to hand over and no way for the tool to act on your behalf. The trade-off is that private accounts, Stories and anything else behind a login are out of reach. For public Reels and posts, which is what most people want to save, nothing is lost.

Saving on each device

iPhone and iPad. Use Safari. When the download starts, tap the arrow at the top of the screen or open the Files app and look in Downloads. To move the video into your camera roll, open it in Files, tap Share, and choose Save Video.

Android. Chrome saves to your Downloads folder and shows a notification when the file is ready. Your gallery app picks it up automatically.

Windows and Mac. Files land in your Downloads folder. If the browser plays the video in a tab instead of saving it, use the Download button on the page rather than the browser's player.

When something goes wrong

• "That does not look like a supported link." Copy the link to one specific Reel or post. Profile links and links with the username but no post ID are not videos.
• "This video is unavailable" or "private." The account is private, the post was deleted, or Instagram is not showing it to signed-out visitors in the region our servers use. Instagram also hides some content behind a login on and off; try again later if the post is definitely public.
• The post is a carousel. Even when one slide is a video, carousels are not supported. Ask the creator for the clip, or use your own copy if it is your post.
• The download stalls. Instagram sometimes throttles requests for a minute or two. Wait and press the button again; a job that already finished is reused.
• You hit today's limit. Guests get a small daily allowance. Sign up to raise it, or see pricing for Pro.

Transcript and summary for Reels

Instagram does not publish captions we can fetch, so the Transcript tab transcribes the audio with speech-to-text. For a Reel that takes a few seconds; for a longer video up to 30 minutes it can take about a minute. You get the spoken words with timestamps, which is handy for saving a recipe, a tip or a quote without watching the clip three times. The Summary tab turns that transcript into a TL;DR, key points or chapters.

A note on copyright

vidstill fetches public videos on your behalf and does not host copies of them. Prepared files are deleted after about an hour. Download only what you have the right to keep, and never re-upload or sell someone else's work. Instagram creators own their posts; saving a Reel to watch offline is different from reposting it as your own. Rights holders can use the DMCA page to request removal of a public video page.
